Twentieth Century Fox Press Conference
Someone asked why celebrities/studios promote their films at ShoWest and this was a response from one of the
panel members at this press conference.

"ShoWest is important to films because it places them into better movie theatres and gets the film on the map to
theatre owners."

"
The Day After Tomorrow"

Roland Emmerich, Director
Mark Gordon, Producer

A major action film about a super storm that strikes earth.  They talked about how this film could be viewed
more as a documentary with the "warming effect" in the world today.

"
Dodgeball"
Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Christine Taylor

The movie is about an owner of a large corporate gym trying to close a smaller gym.  The original title of the
movie was "Underdogs" more like a 80s type movie (such as Revenge of the Nerds).  They have a “Dodgeball”
competition to raise money to save the smaller gym.  The big corporate gym brings in ringers to try and win the
competition so they can close the smaller gym.  The film clips from the movie look like it will be funny.

Christine Taylor was asked what it was like to work with her husband (Ben Stiller).  She said she enjoyed it, as
she could say things she can't always say.  That got a laugh and Stiller looked at his wife and she laughed.  All in
fun folks!

They all had to learn to play dodge ball and their trainer used real dodge balls...they use Nerf type balls in the
movie.  So they got some bruises from training when hit by the dodge ball.  The trainer, they said, was really
tough on them, when they were learning to play the game.
"Garfield"

Jennifer Love Hewitt
Breckin Meyer
Jim Davis - Creator of “Garfield” (“Garfield” turned 25 years old this year.)

The movie is about “Garfield” being jealous of Odie.  Garfield then makes Odie leave
home.  Garfield realizes he misses Odie and goes looking for him.

The film is live action with the exception of "Garfield."   “Garfield” will be done as a CGI
character.  Odie and Nermal will be live animals.  Nermal will be a Siamese cat, not a cute
little gray kitten.   Jim Davis is quite excited about the film.  He did most of the talking.

1995 “Oscar” winners for "Babe,"
Rhythm & Hues worked on the film.  Rhythm & Hues
has an impressive film record since they won their “Oscar” in 1995.
"I, Robot"
Will Smith

The joke for the day was they kept saying there was a surprise guest coming to the press
conference for "I, Robot."  When it came time to introduce the guest.  The announcer said
here is our surprise guest, “of course you already knew who it is.”  Can’t keep secrets with
all those reporters and photographers in one place!

Will Smith was so charming.  He came around and slapped all the media's hands,
photographers and the TV crews too.

When the Smith was sent him the script, they also sent the Robot novels by Asimov.  I
asked him about the storyline, "You read the Robot books, how close to the books is the
movie?” He said it was very close.  He seemed to know the story and I think he knew I had
read the books.    He said it was a murder mystery and that is how the Asimov books can be
interpreted.  The film will follow the 3 rules of the robotic laws as outlined in the Asimov
novels.

They will use CGI for the robots.  They use humans with green costumes, somewhat like
what they did in "Lord of the Rings" for the "Gollum" character.  This is done so they can
get the human emotions for the CGI robot characters, to make them seem more human.

When Smith was asked if he would consider being a director he said no, but he would like to
do some writing.

Smith was also asked, “What would you say to young people?“   He said, “You can only be
as good as the people you hang around with.”
