ShoWest was a big success this year...Last year we had the war in Iraq overshadow
ShoWest, but this year was great! ShoWest had movie screenings/trailers, and lots of
celebrities pitching their new movies to theatre owners. The final night awards gala
boasted about 4,000 guests.
We got to chat with such stars as Nicole Kidman, Will Smith, Burt Reynolds, Michael
Caine, a very pregnant Gywneth Paltrow who won an award (“Distinguished Decade of
Achievement in Film Award”), Jude Law (“Male Star of the Year”) was there too, and
many more. Producers and directors also gave us some insight into their new movies,
and upcoming movies too. Halle Berry - “Female Star of the Year” was a no-show at
the awards due to illness.
Digital was the big theme and piracy again a big issue. Jack Valenti is hoping that the
government will get into the picture and help get some laws to help this issue. Other
countries are also getting into the market. Valenti also talked 2003 box office, click

Jack Valenti stepped down as the head of the Motion Pictures
Association of America, after 37 years. Valenti created the
movie-ratings system in the 1960s, and his latest efforts to stop film
piracy has been a big issue. "I look at this with mixed emotions,
because when you've done something so long, it's difficult to tear
yourself away from it," Valenti told reporters before announcing
retirement plans to theater owners in an address to open the
convention. "But also, in any job, you want to leave before people ask
you to leave."
